Pirate Theme

This past year has been a blast.  The kids and I explored as pirates.  Due to the fact that I am on a team rewriting second grade math curriculum for the district, I have requested to remain on second grade to assist teachers in transitioning between common core and the use of our new curriculum.  I was approached today and asked to consider filming a second stream in math for the upcoming year as well as considering facilitating in our district academy.  My principal accepted my request to remain on second grade.  I will miss the looping process and my darlings.  I know this will be an exciting year on new possibilities!  I wanted to share a few items I used this past year to help jump start the pirate theme.

Teacher Factory does a wonderful job at providing resources on various themes.  They have many free resources and several at a minimum cost.

Kids Craft Weekly provides easy instructions on how to make your own pirate hat.  This was a great bonding craft activity for the first day of school.

Oriental Trading  has a wonderful craft frame that I used to hang the students work in the hallways.  We received a lot of compliments for our display.

Here was my bulletin board to display our "Treasured Second Graders".  I used Carson Dellosa's bulletin board kit to accent my classroom board.  I took butcher paper and wrinkled it delicately and applied freshly made tea with a sponge.  Once the paper dried, I created a map using a table cloth with cute pictures as my inspiration.  With a few Thistlegirl Pirate graphics and ocean borders, my bulletin board was set!

I created a poster and took a picture of the kids to put in their journal folders.

Here are a collection of ideas used in my class this past year.
