Today I worked with a group of three terrific teachers and two sharp standards coaches to rewrite 2nd grades math learning schedule for the county. I might just fall asleep mumbling next generation standards and how they align with common core standards, which knowledge and skill aligns with what benchmark, and addressing content in various stages with UBd in mind. YIKES!!!
Kindergarten is up first for common core. Next years group of kids will be the first to take all assessments on the computer beginning in 3rd grade and assessed on the new common core standards.
Here is an example of the alignment:
NGSSS
Big Idea 1: Represent, compare, and order whole numbers, and join and separate sets.
MA.K.A.1.1
Represent quantities with numbers up to 20, verbally, in writing, and with manipulatives.
Common Core
Domain: Counting and Cardinality K CC
Standard: Know number names and the count sequence.
Cluster: Count to 100 by ones and by tens. Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1). Write numbers from 0-20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
On another note, I was not selected as Duval Math Educator of the year but I landed in the top seven. Still a great honor to be recognized so highly in a district with 160 schools and over 123,000 students (21 largest district in the country). I was contacted today and informed that I was granted the Marita Eng FCTM Scholarship fund (all expenses paid) to FCTM Annual Conference. :)
